What Odoo is and what it is used for

What it is, in one sentence
A modular ERP: applications for sales, purchasing, inventory, accounting, manufacturing, projects, HR, ecommerce and more, all working on the same information. When a sale is recorded, inventory, cost and the journal entry move in the same action.
What it is actually for
- Unifying data: one customer, one product, one price.
- Tracing operations: from purchase order to journal entry, with identifiable owners.
- Valued inventory control: what you hold and what it costs.
- Closing accounts with support: documents that post entries, not parallel records.
- Automating the repetitive: approvals, reminders, reconciliation.
What it is not
Not accounting software with extra modules: accounting is the consequence of recorded operations. Not a ready-made template: without configuration decisions it reflects no process. And not an IT project: the decisions that determine the outcome are business decisions.
The two editions
Community, licence-free with core functionality. Enterprise, by subscription, with full functionality of the subscribed applications, vendor support and an upgrade service. The choice depends on required modules and who maintains the environment.
Where it runs
Odoo Online for standard configuration without custom code; Odoo.sh, a managed platform supporting development and staging; or on-premise, with full control and full responsibility.
What it means in Peru
A Peruvian localization exists, with a PCGE-based chart of accounts, taxes and document types. On that base you must decide series, operation types, detracciones, withholdings and perceptions, and integrate transmission of electronic documents to SUNAT. That is part of the project, not an add-on.
How to tell whether it fits
If operations already live in spreadsheets, if inventory does not match, if the close depends on one person or if each department holds its own version of the data, an integrated ERP addresses the root problem. If the difficulty is only statutory compliance, a local accounting solution may be enough.
FAQ
Is Odoo free?
The Community edition has no licence fee. Enterprise is paid per user and application. In both cases there is hosting, implementation and support cost.
Does it suit a small company?
Yes, with contained scope: sales, purchasing, inventory and accounting. The risk in small companies is activating modules nobody will use.
Does it comply with Peruvian electronic invoicing?
It produces the documents, but transmission to SUNAT is done through an issuing service integration. That is an explicit part of project scope.
