Odoo ERP and accounting for Peru’s energy sector
Energy sector companies in Peru share a set of accounting demands that generic ERP configuration handles badly: long-lived assets, regulated reporting and contracts that span years.

Fixed assets are the centre of gravity
Generation, transmission and distribution assets dominate the balance sheet. Categories, useful lives, depreciation methods, revaluations, component accounting and disposals all have to be configured deliberately. A fixed asset register maintained in a spreadsheet alongside the ERP is the most common problem we are asked to fix.
Cost centres and projects
Cost has to be readable by site, by asset and by project simultaneously. That requires analytic structure decided before the first transaction, not reporting logic added afterwards. Retrofitting analytic distribution onto a year of history is expensive.
Maintenance and operations
Planned and corrective maintenance, spare parts inventory and work orders, each generating cost that has to reach the right asset or centre. The link between the maintenance record and the accounting entry is what makes maintenance cost analysable.
Contracts and revenue
Multi-year supply agreements, indexed tariffs and billing cycles that do not align with calendar months. Revenue recognition criteria need agreement with the accounting team before configuration, because the alternative is monthly manual adjustment.
Regulated and statutory reporting
Sector reporting obligations coexist with standard Peruvian requirements: electronic invoicing, the PCGE chart of accounts, detracciones on certain services, withholdings and the statutory registers. Both views should live on the same database rather than in two parallel processes.
Foreign currency
Equipment purchased abroad, financing in dollars, revenue in soles. One exchange rate source applied consistently across purchasing, asset valuation and accounting, with FX differences posting somewhere someone reviews.
In asset-heavy sectors, the accounting design has to be settled before any module is activated. Everything else is easier to change later; the asset register is not.
Frequently asked questions
Does Odoo handle fixed assets adequately for this sector?
The asset functionality covers categories, depreciation and disposals. Component accounting and revaluation require deliberate configuration, and the design should be validated by whoever signs the financial statements.
Can sector reporting and statutory accounting coexist?
Yes, on one database, using analytic structure and account mapping rather than two sets of books.
What is the usual starting point?
A review of the existing asset register and the analytic structure. Those two determine how much of the rest is configuration versus rework.
